Frequently Asked Questions

General Company Questions

  • Vulcan Line Tools builds specialized hardware and software for electric utilities and telecom companies. Our products — including the Azmyth GIS software, powerline dynamometers, and the WaveTimer — help measure, map, and manage power poles more efficiently.

  • Our solutions are used by linemen, utility contractors, OSP engineers, and co-ops. Linemen rely on our dynamometers and WaveTimer, while engineering firms use Azmyth and associated services for mapping distribution grids, pole clearance, and fiber design.

Products & Services

  • Azmyth is GIS software that turns pole imagery into measurable data. Users can measure heights, attachments, and clearances from 360° imagery and iPhone imagery. They can apply specific rules to these measurements like NESC clearances or lead length measurements. Results can be exported to KML, SHP, or Excel.

  • Azmyth On Foot is the mobile app version of Azmyth, built for iPhone. Instead of 360° vehicle imagery, it lets field teams capture GPS-integrated photos at each pole for fast, flexible collection. This data is instantaneously uploaded to the Azmyth platform for further use.

  • RYG is our color-coded system for fiber and telecom companies to determine pole-attachment viability. Green means viable, Yellow means conditional, and Red means not viable. This prevents unnecessary pole replacements and streamlines make-ready engineering.

  • We manufacture precision dynamometers (10k and 20k models) used to measure conductor tension during stringing, and the WaveTimer, which measures conductor sag with high accuracy. These tools are trusted by transmission and distribution crews to improve safety and reliability in the field.

  • A dynamometer measures the pulling force or tension in a conductor during line construction. Linemen use our 10k and 20k dynamometers to ensure proper sag and tension when stringing new conductors.

  • The WaveTimer measures conductor sag by timing wave travel down a span. This gives crews a quick, accurate way to confirm sag without climbing poles or using heavy equipment.

  • Yes. Our dynamometers and WaveTimer are widely used in transmission projects, while Azmyth software and RYG assessments are common in distribution and fiber deployments.

Technical / Process Questions

  • We use a Mosaic X camera on vehicles to capture high-resolution imagery along routes. The data is processed in Azmyth for measurements and pole mapping.

  • Yes. With Azmyth On Foot, you can capture pole imagery and GPS data directly from an iPhone.

  • Our dynamometers are calibrated for precise tension readings, and the WaveTimer delivers exceptionally accurate sag measurements in real-world field conditions. Azmyth is integrated with RTK-corrected GNSS receivers for sub-inch mapping accuracy.

  • Users can apply NESC clearance rules to each pole and span in Azmyth with the push of a button, flagging issues with a red, yellow, or green color code. This gives engineers and utilities a clear compliance picture.

Pricing & Value

  • Azmyth is available as a subscription, while our dynamometers and WaveTimer are sold as durable hardware devices. Pricing depends on configuration and project needs — contact us for a quote.

  • Using our tools, utilities save by reducing downtime of power distribution with accurate sag and tension measurements of their power lines. They will also have better accounting of their existing infrastructure using our GIS products or services. The result is safer, faster, and more cost-efficient projects.

Support & Implementation

  • Yes. We provide training for linemen and contractors to safely and effectively use our dynamometers and WaveTimer, along with onboarding for Azmyth software.

  • Yes. Our team provides recalibration and maintenance services to ensure long-term accuracy and reliability. We recommend an annual calibration, and we offer the service in-house.

Logistics & Operations

  • Yes. We deliver hardware across the U.S. and provide data collection and analysis services nationwide. Furthermore, Azmyth is available to users worldwide, and we frequently deal with users in different countries.

  • Yes. Dynamometers and the WaveTimer are vital for quickly restoring or rebuilding lines after storms, while Azmyth supports rapid pole assessments.

Future & Innovation

  • We’re advancing both sides of the industry — from field hardware like the WaveTimer and dynamometers, to GIS software like Azmyth and Azmyth On Foot. Together, our tools give utilities faster, safer, and more accurate ways to manage infrastructure.
